David Haller wurde als Kind als schizophren diagnostiziert und war über Jahre hinweg in zahllosen psychiatrischen Einrichtungen. Auch jetzt, mit Anfang 30, befindet er sich wieder in einer geschlossenen Abteilung. Dort versinkt er im alltäglichen Trott: Essen, Therapie, Medikamente, Schlaf. Den Rest der Zeit verbringt er mit Lenny, die sich ihren Optimismus trotz massiver Alkohol- und Drogensucht nicht nehmen lässt. Davids Routine wird durch die Ankunft der neuen Mitpatientin Syd Barrett unterbrochen. Beide fühlen sich nicht nur auf unerklärliche Weise zueinander hingezogen, David muss nach einer einschneidenden Begegnung mit Syd auch die Möglichkeit in Betracht ziehen, dass die Stimmen, die er hört, und die Visionen, die er hat, real sein könnten...
